The prop firm industry has a trust problem. After MyForexFunds' collapse in 2023, traders learned the hard way that not all firms can (or will) pay. Here's how to verify a firm's payout history before risking your money.

The Reality of Prop Firm Payouts

Let's be clear: legitimate prop firms do pay traders. FTMO alone has paid over $130 million. The5%ers, Topstep, and several others have years of verified payout history.

But the industry also has bad actors — firms that:

  • Find excuses to deny payouts (sudden "rule violations")
  • Delay withdrawals indefinitely
  • Disappear entirely with trader funds

Your job is to tell the difference before you pay.

Where to Find Real Payout Proof

1. Trustpilot Reviews (With Caution)

Search "[Firm Name] Trustpilot" and filter for 1-star reviews mentioning "payout," "withdrawal," or "payment." Legitimate complaints are specific — dates, amounts, communication screenshots.

Warning: Both fake positive and fake negative reviews exist. Look for detailed, verifiable complaints, not vague praise or attacks.

2. Reddit Communities

Subreddits like r/Forex, r/FuturesTrading, and r/PropFirm have active discussions. Search for "[Firm Name] payout" and read multiple threads.

Best sign: Screenshots of actual withdrawal confirmations with usernames you can verify are real accounts (post history, account age).

3. Trading Discord Servers

Large trading Discords often have dedicated prop firm channels. Ask directly: "Anyone here been paid by [Firm]?" Real traders will share their experience.

4. Official Payout Counters

Some firms display total payouts on their website. While these can be faked, established firms like FTMO back their numbers with audited reports.

5. YouTube Payout Videos

Search "[Firm Name] payout proof" on YouTube. Real traders often document their withdrawal process. Check the channel's credibility — is it a real trader or someone who only posts prop firm promos?

Red Flags That a Firm Might Not Pay

🚩 Suspiciously Cheap Challenges

If a $100K challenge costs $99, ask yourself: how do they make money? Legitimate firms charge enough to cover payouts to successful traders. Ultra-cheap firms often rely on denying payouts to stay profitable.

🚩 No Verifiable Payout History

New firms (under 1 year old) with no documented payouts are high risk. They might be legitimate, but you're the guinea pig finding out.

🚩 Complicated Withdrawal Rules

Watch for rules that make withdrawals difficult:

  • "Must trade X more days before withdrawal"
  • "Minimum withdrawal amounts" that keep increasing
  • "Processing fees" not mentioned during signup
  • Vague "review periods" with no defined timeline

🚩 Rules That Change After Funding

Some firms add restrictions after you're funded that didn't exist during the challenge. If you see reports of this, stay away.

🚩 Forum Posts About Denied Payouts

One complaint could be a disgruntled rule-breaker. Ten complaints with similar stories is a pattern. Look for consistency in what traders report.
